WLQP’s Statement on the Supreme Court’s Definition of “Woman”

WLQP stands firmly with trans women and the wider trans and non-binary community. The Supreme Court’s decision to define “woman” in the Equality Act based on sex, not gender identity, is more than a technical ruling. It is a step backwards, one that ignores lived experience, undermines legal protection, and risks further marginalising an already targeted community.

Language isn't static. Words' meanings shift over time, similar to how society changes. Progress can be uncomfortable at first, but it calls to us to engage with open hearts and open minds. Trying to narrowly define identity in binary terms does not accurately describe our world or those in it.
This ruling will be upsetting for many, particularly trans individuals who are already dealing with an unfriendly political and media environment. At WLQP, we simply wish to remind you that you are loved, valued and appreciated. You are not alone.
To our trans siblings, we stand with you.
For all of our cis allies out there, this is your moment to speak, to educate others, to act with care and with courage. Trans people must not bear this burden alone.
Progress is possible. But only when we listen, learn and stand together. In community and in solidarity, West London Queer Project.
