A night of roaring laughter, filthy humour, unapologetic energy and bags of fun in celebration of Lesbian Visibility Week.

The 26th of April marks Lesbian Day of Visibility. The last day of Lesbian Visibility Week - a week to celebrate and bring continued visibility to women and non-binary people in the LGBTQ+ community.

In honour of this important time of the year, WLQP is hosting another iconic comedy show. This time, we are spotlighting some of the UK's most hilarious lesbians for Lesbian Visibility Week. With Twayna Mayne, Catherine Bohart, and Sapphire Macintosh coming to West London on the Lesbian Day of Visibility for a night of roaring laughter, filthy humour, unapologetic energy, and bags of fun.

You might be asking yourself, what is Lesbian Visibility Day. For starters, let’s dive a bit into the L in LGBTQ+.

We put the L in LGBTQ+...

LGBTQ+ isn’t just a bunch of letters; maybe you know that much by now. It’s a small snippet of a beautiful and diverse community. The letters represent Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and the ‘+’  represents the multitude of other gender and sexuality identifiers that fall outside of the cisgender and heterosexual societal norms.

But why is the L at the beginning? It dates back to the AIDS crisis. During this time, thousands of queer and trans people lost their lives to an, at the time, mysterious and villainised disease. As a result of the social stigma and discrimination of gay and bisexual men, who were disproportionately affected by AIDS, lost connection with their families, were denied access to healthcare and were left without support.

This is where the lesbian community took a stand. They came in to volunteer at hospitals and clinics, organised support groups and fundraising efforts, fought for research and access to healthcare and cared for those who were distanced from their families and friends.

Lesbians were there. They showed up in numbers when the rest of society turned their backs.

Putting L at the beginning of LGBTQ+ gives the community a chance to show gratitude for the continued work Lesbians are doing in our community, recognising lesbian activism and as a reminder that the community is built by all of us supporting one another.

Lesbian Visibility Week - Visibility is power. And power creates change.

Lesbian Visibility Week (LVW) is a global movement to celebrate and uplift LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people. Across the UK, we come together to make our lives, stories and communities visible – in public spaces, online, in workplaces, in schools and in culture.

Why does viability matter? Women and non-binary people remain under-represented in the media, overlooked in research, excluded from decision-making and at higher risk of violence and poor mental health. Visibility matters because invisibility costs lives.
